In 1972, Ed Robson stood on 2,560 acres of cotton farm located in the then-remote Chandler area, a 20 minute drive southeast of Phoenix, and envisioned a new type of community – a Robson Resort Community – for active adults: affordable, upscale living with resort-level amenities and the comforts of the country club lifestyle. This patch of land successfully grew to a vibrant community known as Sun Lakes. Sun Lakes, which sold out in 2005 now encompasses 3,500 acres and is like its own city with approximately 10,000 homes and 19,200 residents.
The success of Sun Lakes set the stage for other active adult Robson Resort Communities in Arizona. In 1987, the SaddleBrooke community opened in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, just north of Tucson. The SaddleBrooke community is home to 63 holes of golf, three clubhouses, fitness centers, tennis courts, a performing arts theater and over 4600 homes.
SunBird Golf Resort, located in Chandler, Arizona, three miles east of Sun Lakes, was purchased in 1989 from the portfolio of a St. Louis-based savings and loan association. The property initially consisted of 320 acres and was re-launched in 1990 with additional property and a new line of homes, complete with the construction and marketing expertise of the Robson companies. In 1998, the community sold out with more than 1,600 homes built.
In January of 1993, PebbleCreek, the fourth Robson Resort Community, opened in the Palm Valley area of Goodyear, Arizona. Located approximately 17 miles west of Phoenix, PebbleCreek has sold more than 3,800 homes. Due to the community’s tremendous success, an additional 1,600 acres were purchased in the fall of 1998 to house 27 holes of championship golf and additional amenities. PebbleCreek is home to the Environments for Living® learning center built in 2009 that showcases the energy-saving technology available with each home at a Robson Resort Community.
Sensing an opportunity for a Robson Resort Community in southern Arizona, Quail Creek was acquired in the summer of 1999. Located in the beautiful Green Valley area just south of Tucson, Quail Creek comprises approximately 2,500 acres, with more than 1,600 homes built to date.
With Sun Lakes sold out and the demand high for the Robson Resort Community lifestyle, Robson Ranch Arizona opened to meet the continuing demand for active adult housing. Robson Ranch Arizona is situated halfway between Phoenix and Tucson in the Eloy/Casa Grande area. Robson Ranch Arizona opened in 2005 and boasts a multi-million dollar country club complex offering exceptional recreational amenities.
The popularity of the Robson Resort Community lifestyle and SaddleBrooke’s breathtaking location in north Tucson led to the opening of two other nearby communities: The Preserve at SaddleBrooke (2004) and SaddleBrooke Ranch (2008). The Preserve at SaddleBrooke consists of a small number of truly special lots located adjacent to the Catalina Mountains, overlooking the SaddleBrooke development, with a championship golf course and a clubhouse and restaurant with incomparable views.
SaddleBrooke Ranch is the newest Robson Resort Community. Located approximately 5 miles north of SaddleBrooke, SaddleBrooke Ranch showcases a 31,000 square feet (approx.) Sports, Spa & Aquatics Center along with a 18-hole championship golf course and practice facility.
New Markets
After many years of extensive research and feasibility studies in the Texas market, the first Robson Resort Community outside of Arizona opened in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. The master plan for Robson Ranch Texas, located in Denton, comprises approximately 2,700 acres. The community opened in May 2001 and currently includes over 1,100 homes.
The Robson Lifestyle
